Tutor’s Teaching Background

I was selected as a VJC peer tutor for underperforming students in JC1 H2 Mathematics. Trained tutees to think graphically and intuitively, foundational skills especially important in the P5 syllabus when students are starting to tackle harder geometry, and learn how to express numbers in terms of rates and percentages. Helped students to improve grades from Cs and Ds to As and Bs. I also have experience in volunteer tutoring a group of 6 students in G1 / G2 math and science, many of whom suffered from lack of confidence, poor foundations, and mental blocks. Strategies such as verbalising thought process, presenting answers to each other, peer-to-peer teaching and strategic breaks worked well in improving their foundations and making learning less stressful and more efficient. Helping them stay cool-headed is also useful in exams. Although I have not tutored in 2 years, my experience studying economics in NUS, a subject more math intensive than the PSLE, allows me to more than relate to the struggles of students. I have my own set of strategies for thinking clearly while in high stress exams and how to revise efficiently, and I am sure they will be useful to students.
